On Thursday, June 2, 2016, the Sacramento Police Department is proud to take part in the national effort to end gun violence. Today we are recognizing the second annual “National Gun Violence Awareness Day.”
Today honors the lives of more than 30,000 Americans killed each year by guns and countless other lives impacted due to senseless acts of violence. With this in mind, we would like to take an opportunity to remind legal gun owners how to safely store and secure any and all firearms by doing the following:
· Store firearms unloaded
· Ammunition should be stored separately in a locked container
· Utilize a gun lock
· Use a locked gun box or gun safe
This year through the month of April, the Sacramento Police Department has received 66 reports of stolen firearms as a result of burglaries. There were 16 stolen firearms from burglaries to businesses and 50 from residential burglaries.
In an effort to keep firearms safe from children, we will be providing free cable-style gun locking devices to the public. The locking devices will be available at our public safety counters:

· William J. Kinney Police Facility: Sacramento Police Department: 3550 Marysville Boulevard
