On Wednesday October 12, 2016, California State University, Sacramento held a Signing Ceremony for the new Law Enforcement Candidate Scholars (LECS) academic program on the Sacramento State Campus. This program is a unique ground-breaking “scholars to officers” partnership with the California Highway Patrol and the Sacramento Police Department.
LECS is the first of its kind in the country. The program is open to juniors and seniors at Sacramento State, no matter their major. Among the goals are to increase retention and graduation rates, create a strong partnership between Sacramento State and law enforcement agencies, and ensure that law enforcement personnel and leaders mirror the state’s diversity.
“We will focus on both career and leadership development – and positioning these scholars to become officers and to take leadership roles in the future,” says Moffatt, a former Sacramento Police officer and Criminal Justice faculty member. “Now these students will not only graduate from Sacramento State but they will have jobs in law enforcement.”
