On Monday, October 17, 2016 at approximately 5:09 p.m., the Sacramento Police Department received information about a stolen vehicle that had been spotted and was being followed by a citizen.
The complainant recognized the driver as her ex-boyfriend, 29-year-old Manuel Vasquez, whom she had an active restraining order against. This information was relayed to officers who spotted Vasquez in the stolen vehicle in the area of Freeport Boulevard and 5th Avenue. As officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver fled and led them on a vehicle pursuit which terminated near the intersection of Lanatt Street and C Street.
The suspect fled from the stolen vehicle while the department’s helicopter (Air1) was overhead. Officers in the helicopter observed the suspect retrieve a silver-colored object from the vehicle and conceal it in his waistband before disappearing into the business complex along the north side of Lanatt Street and C Street. Additional officers responded to the area and established a perimeter. As a precautionary measure, a nearby business was temporarily put on lockdown and safely evacuated while officers searched for Vasquez. Several specialty units were dispatched to the scene to assist in the search and apprehension of the possibly-armed man.
Over the course of the next nine hours, officers took part in a large-scale apprehension effort. After an exhaustive search, officers located the suspect hiding in the rafters of a large commercial building. At 3:02 a.m., officers facilitated a peaceful surrender of the man without any further incident.
Manuel Vasquez (pictured below) was arrested on multiple charges including a violation of his parole, vehicle theft, reckless evasion, resisting arrest, and a violation of a court order.
