Sacramento Police Work Hard to Get Guns off the Street

The Sacramento Police Department continues to be focused on making Sacramento the safest big city in California.  The department understands that the most effective way to do that is to combat gun violence.  With that goal in mind, Sacramento police officers – from detectives to patrol officers, have been working hard to take guns out of the hands of criminals and off the streets.

So far this year, 1184 guns have been taken off of the streets of Sacramento.  Of those guns, 814 guns were seized as evidence.  By comparison, 1,375 were seized in 2015 and 1,204 in 2014.

By removing these guns off of our streets we are preventing violent crimes from occurring.  Many of the guns that fall into the hands of criminals were found to be unsecured and stolen by thieves.  As a responsible gun owner here are few tips we encourage you follow when storing your firearms.

·       Firearms should be kept unloaded when not in use.

·       Store your firearms in a locked cabinet, safe, gun vault or storage case when not in use.

·       Make sure the location they are stored is inaccessible by children.

·       Store your ammunition in a locked location, separate from firearms.

·       Use a gun locking device that renders the firearm inoperable when not in use.

·       Educate everyone in your family about firearms safety.

The Sacramento Police Department is committed to the safety of our community and urges you take prevention steps in securing any firearms you own.
