On Wednesday, November 9, 2016, Sacramento City Manager John Shirey and Howard Chan, Assistant City Manager but soon-to-be Interim City Manager, announced the appointment of Deputy Chief Brian Louie as Interim Police Chief for the Sacramento Police Department effective December 10, 2016.
With the pending retirement of Chief Sam Somers Jr., Deputy Chief Louie will transition into the role of interim chief until appointment of a newly selected chief.
Deputy Chief Louie’s tenure and experience will serve the organization well. We have full confidence in his knowledge, capabilities, and decision making skills. With this announcement, we are pleased to have him as our Interim Police Chief as the city moves forward selecting its new Police Chief.
Deputy Chief Louie began his career with the Sacramento Police Department 36 years ago and has worked his way up the ranks from student trainee. He has worked almost every assignment in the organization. Prior to his appointment as the interim police chief, he has spent the last nine years as a deputy chief where he currently oversees the Office of Specialized Services.
Deputy Chief Louie has a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from C.S.U. Sacramento, and a Master’s degree in Emergency Services from C.S.U. Long Beach. He is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy, the California Peace Officer Standards and Training Command College, and the Police Executive Research Forum Senior Management Institute for Police.
