The Sacramento Police Department is proud to announce the opening of its state-of-the-art, “Real Time Crime Center” (RTCC). This facility functions as a centralized technology and intelligence center. The goal of the RTCC is to provide field personnel with instant access to information related to specific incidents as they develop, provide situational awareness for field units, and enhance investigative capabilities of the department.
Planning for the RTCC began over three years ago, with a vision to introduce advanced technology to combat crime and equip the Sacramento Police Department with tools to meet the challenges of modern policing. The RTCC will utilize live and recorded camera feeds, crime patterns and activity, intelligence data, social media, and maps to share pertinent information with field officers and detectives during developing situations. With the implementation of the RTCC, personnel will now be able to provide rapid, real-time information to officers working in the field.
The center utilizes existing office space at the department’s Central Command Police Facility and was built at a cost just under $500,000. The center was funded by a combination of federal grant and Sacramento Regional Transit District funding. Regional Transit will also utilize the RTCC as its Security Operations Center.
The RTCC has a Video Wall component allowing the Police Department to visually assess and integrate a variety of criminal information data sources and camera feeds, while viewing a number of locations throughout the city at the same time. It will become the hub for monitoring and managing large City sponsored or outside vendor events.
Specially trained officers, detectives and analysts are assigned to the RTCC and are responsible for monitoring incoming data. They will be able to communicate spikes, trends and anomalies in reported crimes to the different commands. This information will enable deployment of resources proactively as situations develop.
The department’s “Police Observation Devices” (PODS), “License Plate Reader” (LPR) System and “ShotSpotter” Program will be instrumental in providing real-time information to the RTCC. The center also incorporates information from 911 dispatch calls, radio traffic and other law enforcement records systems.
This high-tech, real-time crime center will provide officers with more accurate information when responding to calls. The creation of the RTCC is a multiplier in the Police Departments efforts to solve crimes and protect property and life. This is the next step in the evolution of the Police Department’s preparation and response to localized crime and ensuring the public’s safety.
