On December 17, 2016, Sacramento Police responded to the intersection of 65th Street and Broadway for a hit-and-run collision. The suspect vehicle was described as a 1980’s or 1990’s full size Chevrolet van.
After the collision, the suspect fled the scene and several bags fell off the van into the roadway.
When officers arrived at the accident scene, they conducted a search of the abandoned property and located a live pipe bomb in one of the bags. The roadway was immediately closed and several nearby businesses were evacuated as a precaution.
Members of the Department’s Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit (EOD) responded to take over the investigation and confirmed that the item was a live pipe bomb. After several hours, and a methodical plan, officers rendered the device safe.
Later that night, the description of the suspect vehicle was dissimilated to local and nationwide media outlets. Within several days, an engaged community member observed a matching van in a nearby parking lot and reported it to police. The van was found to be the involved in the hit-and-run collision and early information suggested that the property which fell out of the van belonged to a subject by the name of Alan Davis.
Throughout the investigation, officers received several tips from community members through “Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers.” These tips provided officers enough information to corroborate evidence they had toward Davis’ involvement.
On January 25, 2017 officers assigned to the Post Release Community Supervision Team (PRCS) located 53-year old, Alan Davis and arrested him on unrelated charges.
On February 2, 2017, the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office issued an arrest warrant for Davis for possessing a destructive device in a public place.
It is because of engaged community members, officers could solve this crime and prevent further criminal acts by this individual. The Sacramento Police Department believes that an engaged community, is a safe community.
