On Thursday, February 16, 2017, at approximately 7:26 p.m., the Sacramento Police Department responded to the area of Richards Boulevard and North 7th Street regarding a collision with a vehicle and a pedestrian.
When officers arrived, they located a pedestrian laying in the roadway. The Sacramento Fire Department responded to the scene and immediately transported the pedestrian, a 61-year old male, to a local area hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
During the investigation, it was learned that the pedestrian was crossing Richards Boulevard when he was struck. The driver of that vehicle immediately stopped and tried to protect the man with her vehicle. A second vehicle, described as a dark-colored, medium-sized, four-door sedan struck the pedestrian and fled the scene. The driver and solo occupant was a female white or Hispanic adult.
Due to the fatality, the Department’s Major Collision Investigation Unit (MCIU) responded to the scene to take over the traffic investigation. The driver of the first vehicle remained at the scene and has been speaking with officers.
The victim’s identity will be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.
The Sacramento Police Department is requesting the community’s assistance in identifying the driver and the vehicle that fled the scene.
