On Monday, March 6, 2017 at 1:53 p.m., the Sacramento Police Department received multiple reports of a disturbance occurring along the 1100 block of Alhambra Blvd. The callers described a shirtless man running up to people outside a business and expressing a desire to fight them.
The first officer arrived on scene and made contact with the man described by callers. The man was seated on a curb in the parking lot of a business. The officer attempted to engage the man in conversation but the man became agitated and confrontational. The officer gave him a number of verbal commands that the subject refused to obey. As a second officer arrived on scene, the man became more erratic and non-compliant. He fled across L Street and into an adjacent medical facility.
Officers pursued the man into the building where he became combative with officers and resisted their efforts to detain him. The officers deployed a number of less-lethal force options including the Taser and baton which were not effective. Additional officers arrived and were finally able to subdue the subject. He was placed in handcuffs and was, at that time, alert and responsive to officers’ questions.
As part of the department’s standard after-force care procedures, officers requested medical personnel respond to evaluate the man. Fire personnel arrived on scene and began to render medical treatment to the man. Prior to being transported from the scene, the man became unresponsive and CPR was initiated by fire personnel. The man was transported to an area hospital where he is currently in critical but stable condition.
