Today, the Sacramento Police Department had the opportunity to posthumously recognize a Sacramento police officer who died in the line of duty almost a century ago. Earlier this morning, at the 15th Annual Remembrance Ceremony held at the Sacramento Police and Sheriff’s Memorial at Woodlake Park, Officer Frank Lungershausen was honored. Officer Lungershausen was an 8-year veteran who was assigned to the Traffic Division as a motor officer. On December 27, 1935, Officer Lungershausen had just finished his shift in the field and was beginning to head home. Minutes later, he was struck by another motorist and sustained serious injury. He was found unresponsive by fellow patrol officers who rushed him to the hospital, however he succumbed to his injuries soon after.
At the time of his death, Officer Lungershausen was survived by a wife and two daughters. The Police Department hosted a funeral, but as sometimes occurs, Officer Lungershausen’s tribute slipped into history and his name was not enrolled here at the Memorial. Today, we had the opportunity to make that right and honor him with the extended Lungershausen family present.
Additionally, Officer Lungershausen will be honored at the National Memorial in Washington D.C., on May 13, 2017, with his extended family present
