Two weeks ago, the Sac PAL, girl’s rugby team won the NorCal High School Rugby Championship in Stockton, California. Over the past year, the Amazons have played some great local competition which has brought them back to the national stage.
On Wednesday, May 17, 2017 the team will travel to Elkhart, Indiana where they defend their title as National Champions by facing competition from all over the United States. This competition will showcase the skills of these tremendous female athletes and allow Universities from all over the country to see their talent first hand. This is a pathway to college, where many interested schools will use it to recruit these special athletes and offer scholarships.
The Sacramento Police Activities League is a nonprofit organization, staffed by volunteer Sacramento Police Officers and community volunteers. These volunteers have built this sports program to provide inter-city youth with opportunities they may not have had without the program. The goal of this partnership between police officers and the community is to build lasting relationships between the police department and families in underserved communities.
The Rugby program started in 2011 with one co-ed middle school team consisting of 15 players. Over the years, the program has grown to approximately 200 boys and girls ranging in age from eight years old to high school. While ensuring a safe area for kids to learn and play, the Sacramento Police Athletic League has led the way in developing a successful program which has produced a high level of talent.
Over the next week, the Sacramento Police Department will be reporting the Amazons’ progress on Facebook and Twitter (@SacPolice). We urge you to support these young ladies as they start their journey of defending their National Title!
