Over the past few weeks, the Sacramento Police Department has had several high-profile shootings which have resulted in two fatalities in the Oak Park neighborhood. While overall crime is down in this area, the emergence of these violent attacks has caused great concern to the Department and our community. Below is a summary of the recent incidents:
· May 9, 2017 - Homicide Investigation – 6th Avenue
· June 24, 2017 - Police Seek Help in Oak Park Shooting Investigation
· June 29, 2017 - Homicide Investigation – 12th Avenue and 40th Street
In the wake of these tragic events, the Sacramento Police Department is working in conjunction with Mayor Darrell Steinberg, Councilmember Jay Schenirer and community leaders to develop a comprehensive plan to address the recent violence.
Recently, we have met with community leaders and elected officials to understand community concerns, discuss law enforcement strategies and develop a meaningful approach to ending the violence. Community input has been an integral part of our planning effort.
Starting today, the Department has deployed a significant number of police personnel to the Oak Park community to support an environment of safety. As a result, residents will notice an increased presence of officers in their neighborhoods. These officers will be conducting a variety of duties, with a focus on active community engagement.
Over 30 officers from a variety of specialty units will patrol and engage with the community at several planned neighborhood functions over the 4th of July holiday weekend. Additionally, the Department will continue to work in partnership with other local law enforcement partners, neighborhood advocates, associations and leaders to encourage citizens to come forward with any information they may have regarding crimes in the neighborhood.
The City of Sacramento and the Sacramento Police Department have sponsored several community events over the coming holiday weekend. The goal of these events is for all communities, elected officials and law enforcement to stand together against violence and begin the process of creating a healthy and safe community once again.
