On Wednesday, July 12, 2017, the Department’s South Gang Enforcement Team (SGET) was patrolling the Oak Park neighborhood in response to the recent increase in shootings. During their patrol, they observed a man exit a vehicle with an assault style rifle and run behind a residence. Not knowing if other firearms were in the car, officers carefully approached the vehicle and contacted three men sitting in the car. The male who fled with the rifle returned and was subsequently detained.
Once all the men were safely detained, SGET officers conducted a search of the vehicle and located a loaded handgun, a loaded large capacity rifle magazine and additional ammunition. Behind the house where one of the males fled to, an assault rifle was found hidden in an inoperable vehicle.
With information obtained from the investigation, a search warrant was attained for a nearby residence belonging to one of the suspects who was detained. During the service of the warrant, officers seized an additional assault rifle, a handgun and a high capacity loaded magazine from the house. Ultimately, all the men were booked into jail on firearm and conspiracy related charges.
These types of proactive efforts conducted by the Gang Enforcement Team have an immeasurable impact on the safety of our community.
