On Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at approximately 10:26 p.m., the Sacramento Police Department responded to the area of Norwood Avenue and the eastbound off-ramp to Interstate 80 for calls of an injury collision involving a motorcycle.
When officers arrived, they located a motorcycle and rider in the roadway. The rider was unresponsive. Fire personnel also responded and transported the rider to the hospital for medical treatment where despite lifesaving efforts, the rider died from his injuries.
During the investigation, it was learned the motorcycle was traveling southbound Norwood Avenue splitting lanes when it entered the intersection of the off-ramp against a red light. The motorcycle collided with a white BMW sedan that was exiting the freeway making a northbound turn onto Norwood through a green light. The motorcycle collided with the left side of the BMW. The BMW stopped momentarily but continued northbound Norwood at a high rate of speed.
Sacramento police are asking for the public’s help to identify the driver and the vehicle that fled. The vehicle is described as:
· A white BMW sedan, 3 or 5 series, that may have driver’s side damage caused from this collision. The BMW may have been occupied by more than one occupant.
Due to the fatality, the Department’s Major Collision Investigation Unit (MCIU) responded to the scene to take over the traffic investigation. Investigators checked the area for additional evidence and witnesses.
The victim’s identity will be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.
