This press release is a summary of the facts known at this time. As the investigation continues, the preliminary information may change and those details will be released as they become available.
On Monday, September 18, 2017 at 7:04 p.m. the Sacramento Police Department responded to the 7600 block of Bellini Way to assist bail bond agents who requested assistance as they were attempting to serve an arrest warrant on a wanted subject.
Responding officers were advised by the agents that the suspect had fled into a bathroom with a handgun. A Sacramento Police Sergeant and a K9 Unit entered the residence to assist the bail agents and to initiate dialogue with the suspect to safely negotiate his surrender.
Once inside, the officers repeatedly attempted to negotiate with the suspect to surrender but he refused directions to comply and remained in the bathroom with the handgun. While in the bathroom, the suspect fired his handgun at least one time in an unknown direction. The Sergeant continued to talk with the suspect for over 30 minutes attempting to get the suspect to safely surrender.
While negotiating with the suspect, he displayed the handgun towards the officers. A 17-year veteran of the Department fired his duty weapon striking the suspect multiple times. After the shooting, officers immediately began rendering aid to the suspect. The Sacramento Fire Department arrived on scene and transported the suspect to a local area hospital where he is listed in stable condition.
The identity of the suspect is not being released at this time, due to the on-going nature of the investigation. No officers were injured during the incident and no other residents were in the house at the time of the incident.
Homicide Detectives, Internal Affairs, Office of Public Safety Accountability, Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office and Crime Scene Investigation Units responded to the scene to begin the officer-involved shooting investigation.
