In August 2017, the Sacramento Police Department (SPD), the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department (SSD), the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office partnered to address an increase in violent gang activity in the City and County of Sacramento.
Following a high-profile shooting that occurred in August 2017 at Meadowview Park, investigators identified an ongoing feud between two criminal street gangs dating back to 2015. This feud has resulted in many shootings, attempted murders and murders. As a result, a joint operation including several local, state and federal agencies was initiated. The goal of this collaboration was to stop the increasing gun violence that was plaguing our community.
With our federal, state and local partners, we were able to make a positive difference in these neighborhoods. On December 14, 2017, the first phase of the investigation was concluded with an arrest operation that involved over 200 officers at locations throughout the region.
At this time, the investigation has resulted in 29 felony arrests, 211 firearms seized and over 30 search warrants were served. Many of the firearms were found to be illegally altered or prohibited to possess in the State of California such as assault weapons and fully automatic machine guns.
The 29 suspects arrested face a variety of charges to include; homicide, robbery, narcotic sales, auto theft, identity theft, firearms trafficking and firearms possession.
Investigators have gained a tremendous amount of insight into the scope of the criminal street gangs that operate within the Sacramento region. We hope that these arrests will have a positive impact on our community by decreasing the crime and gun violence associated with these groups. While the operational phase of the joint investigations has concluded, the individual investigations assigned to each agency continue. We fully expect more arrests to come with those investigations.
