On Thursday, February 22, 2018, at approximately 11:08 a.m., the Sacramento Police Department received a call of a subject wielding a knife near Elvas Avenue and 63rd Street.
Patrol officers arrived and located the male. The male subject was detained by officers and found to have a knife in his possession. After securing the knife and talking with the male, officers deemed the appropriate action was to transport the male to a hospital for a mental health evaluation.
A uniformed patrol officer transported the male to a local hospital in the 4000 block of J Street. While at the hospital, the male subject fled from the officer on foot into a residential area. The officer pursued the suspect on foot northbound from the hospital and caught up to the suspect at 39th and H Streets. While attempting to take the suspect into custody, the suspect physically resisted the officer and became combative. During this violent struggle, the suspect gained control of the officer’s duty weapon by removing it from his holster. As the officer was attempting to regain control of his firearm, the suspect fired the officer’s weapon multiple times.
An off-duty firefighter passing by, observed the officer struggling with the suspect and stopped to assist the officer. With the assistance of the citizen, the officer was able to regain control of his duty weapon and safely take the suspect into custody. No rounds were fired by the officer in this incident.
The officer sustained minor injuries from the suspect during this incident. The suspect was not injured but was transported to the hospital for precaution.
Officers conducted an initial canvas of the area for witnesses and evidence. Due to the severity of the assault and circumstances, Homicide detectives responded to the scene and took over the investigation. Detectives continued to canvass the area for additional evidence and witnesses.
Once released from the hospital, the suspect will be booked for attempt homicide on a peace officer.
