Incident Update
We would like to take this opportunity to provide an update on the incident that occurred in the 7500 block of 29th Street.
Detectives from the Sacramento Police Department (SPD) Homicide Unit, Crime Scene Investigators, and investigators from the Sacramento County Crime Lab have finished processing the scene. Due to the nature of their work, final results will not be available for some time. Yet, there are some preliminary findings that SPD would like to share with the public.
Based on the circumstances of this case, SPD is prohibited from releasing the identification of the suspect until next of kin notifications are completed by the Deputy Coroner’s Office. However, our initial investigation has revealed that the suspect is a male black in his early twenties and has a familial association to the residence where the officer involved shooting took place. Shortly after the incident, SPD homicide detectives began working with the occupants of that residence and have remained in constant contact since.
During a neighborhood canvass, investigators identified at least three vehicles with damage that is believed to have been caused by the suspect. In addition, an adjacent and occupied residence had a sliding glass door shattered. Orbiting deputies of the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department’s law enforcement helicopter had witnessed the suspect shatter the door before engaging the SPD officers.
Prior to the shooting, the involved officers saw the suspect facing them, advance forward with his arms extended, and holding an object in his hands. At the time of the shooting, the officers believed the suspect was pointing a firearm at them. After an exhaustive search, scene investigators did not locate any firearms. The only item found near the suspect was a cell phone.
SPD acknowledges the seriousness of this incident and the impact it has on our community. We are committed to providing timely information, communicating openly, and working directly with our community so that they have a full understanding of what occured
Both of the involved officers were equipped with body-worn cameras. There is also video and audio footage from the law enforcement helicopter that assisted on the call. We are currently preparing that material to release to the public.
