Air Bag Thefts – Prevention Tips

Over the last month, we have seen multiple instances of driver’s side air bags being stolen from newer vehicles. In some instances, the vehicles have been a 2013 or newer Honda Civic. The air bags are not easily removed, and the suspects are likely taking 5-10 minutes to do so.

If you own one of these vehicles, the thefts are mostly occurring during the early mornings. Here are some preventative tips related to these crimes:

-Please keep an eye out for suspicious activity or noise during late night / early morning hours and call us to report such activity.

-If possible, please park your vehicle in a well-lit area.

-There are several steering wheel devices that can be placed on the steering wheel to deter, and prevent, the theft (A quick internet search will provide several options in various price ranges).

-When a parking garage is available, please park inside the garage.

The Sacramento Police Department encourages any witnesses with information regarding these crimes to contact the dispatch center at (916) 264-5471 or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at (916) 443-HELP (4357) or submit an anonymous tip using the free “P3 Tips” smartphone app.  Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward up to $1,000.
