The Sacramento Police Department’s South Gang Enforcement Team (SGET) is committed to keeping our community safe. Since their inception in 2011, the mission has been to proactively patrol known gang locations, investigate shootings and gang related crimes, gather gang intelligence information, and work collaboratively with our community to provide prevention and intervention strategies. The team is currently comprised of four officers and one sergeant. Complimenting SGET are four additional officers specifically assigned to investigate Shot Spotter related incidents.
Over the course of the last seven plus years, SGET has seized approximately 700 firearms through a variety of investigations. Since the first of the year, SGET and Shot Spotter officers seized a combined 40 firearms through search warrants, Shot Spotter investigations, shooting investigations, robbery investigations, traffic stops, and other proactive cases. During these incidents, SGET officers have arrested a large number of validated gang members from south area street gangs that have historically been responsible for innumerable homicides, shootings, robberies, burglaries, and other violent crimes.
This type of proactive police work is critical to ensure we keep our community safe. By the end of 2018, reported Robberies and Aggravated Assaults have fallen 14% and 9%, respectively, in the South Command compared to the previous five-year average.
A comprehensive approach of collaboration by law enforcement and community utilizing enforcement, intervention and prevention is necessary for us to achieve meaningful results and ensure our city is policed safely and effectively. In addition to enforcement efforts, SGET has also established strong partnerships with community leaders and provides gang awareness training for parents, teachers and school staff members. This training provides strategies to intervene and prevent gang violence. These partnerships are vital to ensure we work collaboratively with our community to ensure we keep our community safe.
