On Wednesday, January 23rd, 2019, the Sacramento Police Department hosted a formal introduction ceremony with the unveiling of our brand-new Bell 505 Jet Ranger X helicopter. This state-of-the-art helicopter is the first one to be used by any law enforcement agency in the entire world.
Today, our new helicopter was named "HALO" in honor of fallen Davis Police Officer Natalie Corona. The name was chosen by the 6th grade class at Bell Elementary School.
Officer Corona attended the Sacramento Police Academy in 2018. During that time, the academy class visited Bell Elementary School frequently as part of their community outreach program. Officer Corona had personal contact and established many positive relationships with the students. Halo is a reference to the Spanish definition of Corona, which means Crown. If you look further into the name Corona, it is also a condition that exists when a circle of light can be seen around the moon at night or around the sun during an eclipse. It is often said the Corona looks like a "Halo" around the moon or the sun. We believe HALO is a fitting name for Sacramento's new helicopter, which protects our community and officers in the entire region like a guardian angel in the sky.
