Since January 1, 2019, there have been at least 18 reported catalytic converter thefts in the South Natomas area of Sacramento. Many of these thefts have occurred in the Willowcreek / River Plaza areas. Additionally, 12 of the 18 thefts have targeted Toyota Prius vehicles. Other vehicles that have been targeted include three Honda Elements, one Ford Excursion, one Dodge Ram 1500 and one Acura ATL.
Consider these tips to help protect your vehicle from catalytic converter theft:
· Park in areas where your vehicle will most easily be seen by passersby.
· Park near windows at a business.
· Park under lights after dark
· Park near security cameras.
· If you have a garage at your residence, park your vehicle inside and keep the garage door shut.
· Calibrate your car’s alarm to set off when it detects vibration.
· Install a catalytic converter protection device that will clamp around the converter.
· Consider engraving your vehicle identification number (VIN) or license plate number on the catalytic converter. This will help law enforcement track your property if it is stolen.
· Have the catalytic converter welded to your car’s frame, which may make it more difficult to steal.
