On Saturday, April 27, 2019, at approximately 9:18 a.m., the Sacramento Police Department responded to an apartment in the 5900 block of 15th Avenue regarding a welfare check of a male adult after receiving a call from someone concerned about his safety.
When officers arrived, they made contact with the male adult who was home alone and the only resident of the apartment. While talking with this subject, officers observed materials, chemicals and equipment in the apartment that were consistent with devices used to make explosives.
The initial responding officers acted quickly on this discovery and immediately took all safety precautions for everyone involved. Due to the severity of this incident, the Explosive Ordnance Detail (EOD) responded to take over the investigation, along with fire personnel and multiple law enforcement regional partners. As a precaution, based on the potentially dangerous materials, chemicals and equipment located in the apartment, neighboring residents were evacuated. Personnel from the EOD secured the scene to ensure the safety of all nearby residents.
Based on the evidence inside the apartment and further follow-up investigation, the male adult resident, 35-year-old David Wolpert (attached photo) was arrested for attempted possession of a weapon of mass destruction. At this time, investigators have determined that at no point was there a specific threat to a person, place or location. Additionally, investigators have not located any explosives during this investigation.
