On Sunday, May 12, 2019, at approximately 1:20 p.m., officers from the Sacramento Police Department responded to the 500 block of Regis Drive regarding a suicidal subject armed with a gun.
Responding officers observed the subject drive recklessly out of the area. Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the subject and he fled from the officers in the vehicle. A vehicle pursuit was initiated, and the driver traveled at speeds up to 90 miles per hour. During the vehicle pursuit, the subject collided into a guardrail. This caused the subject’s vehicle to become disabled on Highway 50, east of Watt Avenue. Once the vehicle came to a stop, officers gave the subject multiple commands to exit the vehicle. The subject refused to exit.
Officers on scene observed the subject armed with a firearm. As officers attempted to negotiate with the subject, he threatened to shoot himself with the firearm. Crisis negotiators responded to assist with this incident. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) assisted with closing down the highway in the impacted area.
For the safety of everyone involved, the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office responded due to this part of the incident being in their jurisdiction. While attempting to gain compliance from the subject, he threw two firearm magazines on the roadway along with a firearm.
At approximately 4:54 p.m., negotiators successfully gained compliance from the subject who exited the vehicle and was detained without incident. Responding officers conducted follow-up investigation and determined the firearm the subject threw on the roadway was a .40 caliber Smith and Wesson handgun (see attached photo) and the firearm magazines were determined to be 30-round capacity magazines. One magazine contained 23 bullets and the other one contained 24 bullets. The subject, a 42-year-old male adult, was arrested for being a felon in possession of a firearm and felony evading.
