On August 24, 2019, at approximately 1:35 p.m., the Sacramento Police Department responded to the area of North 16th Street and McCormack Street regarding a hit and run collision with an injured pedestrian. See original press release here. Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators conducted a thorough and extensive investigation into the incident. This included interviewing witnesses and reviewing surveillance footage of the incident. Through the course of the investigation, detectives learned that an argument had occurred between the suspect and victim prior to the collision. Detectives conducted further follow-up and determined that the collision was intentional, making the incident a homicide. On September 11th, 2019, homicide detectives arrested 26-year-old Deante Whitaker for this incident (photo attached). Whitaker was booked into the main jail on homicide charges. The Sacramento Police Department encourages any witnesses with information regarding this incident to contact the dispatch center at (916) 808-5471 or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at (916) 443-HELP (4357). Witnesses may also submit an anonymous tip using the free “P3 Tips” smartphone app. Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward up to $1,000.
