Attempted Homicide on an Officer- 1200 block of Rivera Drive

On August 4, 2020 at approximately 7:27 p.m., Sacramento Police Department patrol officers responded to a disturbance on the 1200 block of Rivera Drive regarding an armed man brandishing a handgun and threatening suicide. The man was later identified as 50-year-old Albert Wheeler. Officers quickly located Wheeler driving a vehicle in the area. When they attempted to conduct an enforcement stop, Wheeler led them on a high-speed pursuit through the neighborhood.

While officers were in pursuit of Wheeler, a Sacramento Police Department sergeant responded to the original scene to check on the welfare of the reporting party. When the sergeant arrived, it became apparent the subject was leading the pursuit back to the original location where Wheeler had brandished the gun and threatened suicide. The sergeant requested the reporting party go inside their residence for their safety. Seconds later, Wheeler drove down Rivera Drive towards the sergeant and his marked patrol vehicle. As Wheeler passed by the sergeant, he fired multiple rounds at the sergeant, striking his vehicle twice. Thankfully, no community members or officers were injured by the gunfire.

After shooting at the sergeant, Wheeler fled the area and was able to elude officers. He was last seen on Congress Avenue near Rivera Drive in a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado with a temporary California license plate #AL30Y21. The vehicle has since been located, but Wheeler is outstanding.

Wheeler should be considered armed and dangerous and is described as follows:

  • Albert Wheeler, 50 years old
  • 5’8” tall / 180 lbs
  • Brown hair / brown eyes

A statement from Police Chief Daniel Hahn is available here: Chief Hahn’s statement
