The Sacramento Police Department is updating our community on a series of protests that have been occurring every Saturday since the conclusion of the presidential election in November. These protests have been occurring in the area surrounding the State Capitol and have resulted in numerous altercations between two opposing groups. Based on all previous incidents it is apparent that some people in these two groups intend on committing violent acts upon each other and vandalism in our community.
Sacramento Police Department officers, along with assisting outside agencies, have worked to keep these groups separate to ensure the safety of all participants. However, despite our efforts to keep the peace, members from both groups have continuously attempted to confront each other in a violent manner.
Over 150 SPD police officers were deployed to keep both groups separate during the most recent demonstration. Three SPD officers sustained minor injuries from objects being thrown, and lasers directed in their eyes. One officer sustained an ankle injury while rescuing an individual who was being assaulted. At least 10 vehicles were vandalized by members of a group as they marched. Although no one has filed a report regarding the assaults at this time, our Criminal Intelligence Unit continues working to identify anyone participating in any crimes that occurred during these demonstrations.
Hundreds of SPD officers, including homicide detectives, gang detectives, community outreach officers, and police dispatchers have been redeployed from their primary assignments to monitor these protests. These redeployments come at a time when our department is working hard to keep our staff healthy so that they can come to work and perform the essential functions our community needs.
They also come at a time when violent crime has risen across the country, including Sacramento. This year, there has been at least 40 homicides in the City of Sacramento, which is a 30% increase over this time last year. One of these homicides includes a shooting that ended in the tragic killing of a nine-year-old girl. Additionally, aggravated assaults have increased by almost 20% this year. Detectives who would normally follow-up on these cases have been tasked with protest duties every week.
The Sacramento Police Department is committed to the safety of our community and will continue to monitor these demonstrations to ensure the safety of all involved. There will be an increased police presence at future demonstrations involving these two groups.
