On Monday, February 15, 2021, at approximately 9:53 p.m., Sacramento Police Department patrol officers responded to a residence in the East Sacramento area after a victim called to report that her ex-boyfriend, against whom she has a restraining order, had burned their vehicle, threatened to kill her, and was possibly armed.
As officers were on scene talking to the victim, Officer #1 observed the suspect, later identified as 38-year-old Adan Martinez, drive past the victim’s residence in a red minivan. As the officer attempted to pull over Martinez in the area of Julliard Drive and Occidental Drive, he failed to yield, leading the officer to initiate a pursuit of the vehicle. Martinez continued to flee at a high rate of speed throughout the residential neighborhood and ran multiple stop signs.
As speeds of the pursuit declined, assisting officers attempted to deploy stop-sticks in an effort to safely disable the suspect vehicle. Martinez swerved and accelerated into an industrial complex in the 8500 block of Fruitridge Road.
Martinez drove into a corner of the complex where he was unable to continue forward due to perimeter fencing. The three units that were on scene began to engage Martinez with verbal commands. While officers issued commands to Martinez, he began a 3-point turn. As Martinez traveled forward, two officers discharged their firearms, striking him.
Officers waited for additional resources to arrive. Prior to making an approach, officers deployed a less lethal system in an attempt to create visibility into the vehicle. Martinez then exited the vehicle with his hands up. Officers made a safe approach, took him into custody, and rendered medical aid.
Martinez was transported to a local hospital where he was treated and has since been released. Martinez was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on charges including arson, stalking, evasion and narcotics-related offenses.
This incident is being investigated by the Sacramento Police Department’s Homicide Unit and Internal Affairs Division. The Office of Public Safety Accountability and the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office are providing oversight by monitoring the investigation. The officers involved in this incident will be on administrative leave while the investigation continues. The Sacramento Police Department is committed to transparency and additional videos will be released within 30 days.
