On January 2, 2022 just after 1:20 a.m., Sacramento Police Department patrol officers responded to the area of Stockton Blvd. and Fruitridge Rd. regarding a report of a vehicle collision. A vehicle was reported to have struck a pedestrian and then fled the area. When officers arrived, they located the pedestrian, an adult male, with critical injuries. Officers attempted life-saving measures however the pedestrian was eventually pronounced deceased at the scene by responding personnel from the Sacramento Fire Department.
Shortly after, the suspect vehicle and driver were located by an outside agency a short distance from the original scene. The investigation revealed that the driver, identified as 33-year-old Oletha Durham, had stolen the vehicle and was driving under the influence. Durham was arrested on felony charges related to vehicular manslaughter, leaving the scene of a collision, vehicle theft, and driving under the influence.
Due to the fatality, detectives from the Sacramento Police Department’s Major Collision Investigations Unit responded to take over the investigation. Detectives and crime scene investigators conducted a thorough canvass of the area for evidence, witnesses, and additional information.
The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release the identity of the victim after next of kin have been notified.
