UPDATE : Immediately after the homicide, Sacramento Police Department detectives began conducting exhaustive follow-up. During the follow-up investigation, detectives executed a search warrant at a residence and located an illegally possessed firearm. 29-year-old Devonte Lee White was contacted and arrested for charges related to illegal weapon possession. White was booked at the Sacramento County Main Jail where he has remained in custody since the original arrest. On February 24, 2022, after further investigation, Sacramento Police Department detectives obtained an arrest warrant for White for homicide. The same day, White was additionally booked for the homicide and remains in custody at the Sacramento County Main Jail.

On January 25, 2022 at 2:15 a.m., Sacramento Police Department patrol officers responded to the 3700 block of Dayton Street regarding a report that a subject had been shot. Upon arriving at the scene, officers located one victim, an adult male, who sustained at least one life-threatening gunshot wound. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators responded to take over the investigation and will be conducting a thorough canvass of the area for evidence and witnesses. This investigation is in its early stages and the motive for this incident remains under investigation. There is no suspect information to provide at this time.

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release the identity of the victim after next of kin have been notified.
