Update and Arrest - Suspicious Explosions Investigation

Update: On Saturday, January 28th around 12:00 p.m., officers were in the 4300 block of 32nd Street conducting a follow-up investigation related to the vehicle that was damaged the previous day. During this follow-up, which consisted of an area canvass, viewing surveillance footage, and serving a search warrant, officers located two active pipe bombs along with additional evidence that a suspect detonated a pipe bomb in the intersection of 19th Avenue and 32nd Street. The suspect who detonated the pipe bomb was identified as 23-year-old Cody Wiggs. He was arrested on felony charges related to the incident and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail where he remains in custody.

The investigations into these incidents remain active. The Sacramento Police Department urges anybody who may have information regarding these or other similar incidents to contact the police department.

On Sunday, January 23, 2022 at approximately 9:46 p.m., Sacramento Police Department patrol officers responded to the 4000 Block of 34th Street regarding a possible explosion. Responding officers located an unoccupied vehicle with significant damage consistent with an explosion occurring inside the vehicle.  Sacramento Police Department Explosive Ordnance Detail (EOD) Officers and the Crime Scene Investigations (CSI) Unit responded to document and process the scene.  Officers conducted an extensive investigation and were able to determine that no injuries occurred.  Based on evidence located during the investigation, officers believe a homemade explosive device was detonated inside the vehicle.

On Friday, January 28, 2022 at approximately 6:03 p.m., Sacramento Police Department patrol officers responded to the area of 20th Avenue / 32nd Street regarding a possible explosion. Responding officers located an unoccupied vehicle with significant damage consistent with an explosion occurring inside the vehicle.  Sacramento Police Department Explosive Ordnance Detail (EOD) Officers and the Crime Scene Investigations (CSI) Unit responded to document and process the scene.  Officers conducted an extensive investigation and were able to determine that no injuries occurred.  Based on evidence located during the investigation, officers believe a homemade explosive device was detonated inside the vehicle. The circumstances of both incidents are similar.
