UPDATE: Immediately following the shooting, Detectives from the Sacramento Police Department began conducting a thorough investigation. In collaboration with the California Highway Patrol and Sacramento Sheriff's Office, detectives were able to locate evidence and eventually identify the suspect as 40-year-old Rashpal Sahota. On March 1, 2022 at approximately 8:00 p.m., Sacramento SWAT Officers responded to Sahota's residence where Sahota was safely taken into custody. During a search of the residence, officers recovered an illegally possessed handgun (pictured below).
Rashpal Sahota was arrested for violations of California Penal Code sections 245(a)(2) (Assault with a firearm), 246 (Discharge of a firearm at an inhabited dwelling), and 29800(A)(1) (Felon in possession of a firearm) and booked at the Sacramento County Main Jail.

On March 1, 2022 just after 5:50 a.m., Sacramento Police Department patrol officers responded to the area of 5th Street and I Street for a report of a shooting. The victim was walking in the area and was shot at from a passing vehicle. He was an off-duty deputy from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office and was not in uniform at the time of the incident. The victim was not injured however the federal courthouse building nearby appeared to have been struck by gunfire from the suspect.
Due to the circumstances, Sacramento Police Department detectives and crime scene investigators responded to take over the investigation. The motive for this incident remains under investigation and detectives will be conducting a thorough canvass of the area to determine what occurred.
