On May 21, 2022, just after 8:45 a.m., Sacramento Police Department Officers were in the area of Stockton Boulevard and 47th Avenue when they observed two vehicles driving recklessly and endangering the community in the area. The officers were in a marked police vehicle and activated their emergency lights and sirens in an attempt to conduct enforcement stops on the vehicles. Both vehicles continued driving recklessly and led officers on a brief pursuit which later measured approximately a half mile in distance. One of the reckless vehicles collided with an uninvolved vehicle in the area of Stockton Boulevard and 65th Street, which resulted in the death of two of the occupants. The other involved vehicle fled the area and has not been located.
The fatal collision is being investigated by the California Highway Patrol. Based on the preliminary investigation, it has been determined that a total of 26 seconds elapsed from the time officers activated their overhead lights and sirens until the fatal collision occurred. All vehicle pursuits involving Sacramento Police Department Officers are reviewed to ensure they are in compliance with department policy.
