UPDATE: Detectives worked tirelessly and identified Michael Escobar, 23, as the suspect from this shooting. Detectives located him in West Sacramento and he was taken into custody with assistance from the Yolo County Regional SWAT team. He has been booked into the Sacramento County Jail on charges of assault with a firearm and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.
This investigation remains active, and detectives will continue to work with the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office to determine if additional charges may be filed.

On September 25, 2022, just before 1:00 a.m., Sacramento Police Department patrol officers responded to the area of 28th Street and J Street regarding multiple reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male near the intersection, suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Officers rendered emergency medical aid to the individual. Despite these efforts, the man was later pronounced deceased at the scene by responding Sacramento Fire Department personnel.
Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators responded to take over the investigation. They will be processing the scene, canvassing the area, and interviewing witnesses. Preliminarily it is believed that at least two individuals fired guns during the incident. There is no suspect information to provide at this time.
Violent crime prevention is a shared responsibility. As the Sacramento Police Department continues to work to reduce violent crime in our city, incidents like this underscore the importance of collaboration and intervention before tragedies like this can occur.
The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release the identity of the victim after next of kin have been notified.
