Update: Sacramento Police Department detectives have been tirelessly investigating this shooting and working to locate the suspect. On March 19, 2023, with the assistance of the FBI and Oklahoma City Police Department, the suspect, 47-year-old Craig Simpson, was located and arrested in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Simpson will be extradited to Sacramento at a later date where he will face homicide charges related to this investigation.

On December 20, 2022 around 11:20 a.m., Sacramento Police Department patrol officers responded to the 3800 block of Haywood Street for a report of a shooting. At the scene officers located one adult male victim who sustained at least one gunshot wound. Officers performed life-saving measures and the victim was transported to a hospital for treatment where he later succumbed to his injuries.  

Due to the circumstances, homicide detectives and crime scene investigators responded to take over the investigation. They processed the scene, canvassed the area, and interviewed witnesses. This incident remains in its early stages and the exact circumstances of what occurred remain under investigation. There is no suspect information to provide at this time.  

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release the identity of the deceased after next of kin have been notified.
