To provide information to our community, the Sacramento Police Department is releasing pertinent audio and video files from a fatal collision involving a police vehicle that occurred on October 31, 2022, in the area of Bell Street & May Street.

This content consists of one narrated video, one body-worn camera video, and one mounted privately owned camera in the area.

All materials being released from this incident have been redacted to ensure the confidentiality and privacy of those involved. Faces have been blurred, and audio redactions are signified by redacted audio.

Below is a summary of events known to us at this time:

On October 31, 2022, just after 8:10 p.m., a Sacramento Police Department officer driving a marked police vehicle was involved in a vehicle collision.  The officer was on their way to a call for service involving a felony in progress.  While in the area of May Street & Bell Street, the officer’s vehicle and a motorcycle collided in the roadway. At the time of the collision, the officer did not have their emergency lights or siren activated.   The rider of the motorcycle, an adult male, sustained serious injuries and was transported to an area hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. 

Detectives from our Major Collision Investigations Unit and crime scene investigators responded to the scene and immediately began conducting a comprehensive investigation. 

Based on the findings of the investigation, the Sacramento Police Department found that the facts supported a charge of vehicular manslaughter. The Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office reviewed the investigation and concurred with those findings.

On March 1, 2023, a Sacramento County Superior Court Judge issued a misdemeanor warrant for vehicular manslaughter for Officer Benjamin Jillson. He turned himself into the Sacramento Sheriff’s Office where he was processed and released.

In December of 2022, the Sacramento Police Department announced a department wide Traffic Safety Stay. The initiative created a Safety Management Team tasked with reviewing data, training, best practices, policy, and department culture related to driving. Further, direct conversations are continually occurring between officers and their superiors about traffic safety and trends.  Finally, the department asked the City of Sacramento Risk Management for input on our current practices.

Jillson has over two years of service with the Sacramento Police Department and remains on administrative leave with his peace officer powers suspended.
