On May 31st, 2024, around 12:51 a.m., Sacramento Police Department patrol officers responded to 16th Street / Uptown Alley regarding reports of a vehicle vs pedestrian hit-and-run collision. Upon arrival, officers located a 32-year-old male adult with significant injuries. The vehicle had fled the scene prior to officer's arrival. The victim was transported to an area hospital for treatment.
Due to the circumstances, detectives from the Sacramento Police Department’s Major Collision Investigations Unit responded and took over the investigation. Detectives and crime scene investigators conducted a thorough canvass of the area for evidence, witnesses, and additional information. The circumstances of the collision remain under investigation.
During the investigation, detectives positively identified the suspect vehicle and the driver as 41-year-old Joe Johnson of Sacramento.
At around 7pm, Johnson was located in the 2300 block of Broadway by officers and safely taken into custody.
Johnson was booked at the Sacramento County Main Jail on felony hit-and-run related charges.
Today, June 3rd, our detectives were advised that the victim had succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release the identity of the deceased after next of kin have been notified.
