On February 19, 2025, just before 8:00 p.m., Sacramento Police Department patrol officers responded to the area of North B Street and Dos Rios Street for reports of a collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian. Responding officers located an adult female in the roadway. Sacramento Fire Department personnel pronounced the female deceased on scene. The vehicle involved in the collision fled the scene prior to police arrival.
Shortly after the collision, a motorcycle officer working in the downtown area stopped a vehicle matching the description of the one that fled from the scene, near 5th Street and I Street. Due to the circumstances, our Major Collision Investigations Unit (MCIU) detectives and Crime Scene Investigators (CSI) responded to take over the investigation. They processed the scene, canvassed the area, and interviewed any witnesses. After a thorough investigation, the driver of the vehicle that was stopped was arrested. 62-year-old Steve Read, of Sacramento was transported and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail for charges related to felony hit-and-run resulting in death and driving under the influence.
The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release the identity of the deceased after next of kin have been notified.
