On Thursday, August 21, 2025, just after 11:50 p.m., Sacramento Police Department patrol officers responded to the area of 9th Street and T Street for reports of a collision involving two vehicles. Responding officers located an adult male driver in each vehicle. One driver sustained life threatening injuries and was transported to an area hospital in critical condition. The other driver was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries.
Due to the circumstances, detectives from the Major Collision Investigations Unit (MCIU) and Crime Scene Investigators (CSI) responded to the scene. They processed the scene, canvassed the area, and interviewed witnesses. After a thorough investigation, 33-year-old Richard Newman of Sacramento, who sustained minor injuries from the collision, was found to be driving under the influence, and responsible for causing the collision. He was transported and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on August 23, 2025, for charges related to driving under the influence causing great bodily injury.
On September 11, 2025, the Sacramento Police Department was notified that the driver that was in critical condition succumbed to his injuries.
The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release the identity of the deceased after next of kin have been notified.
Newman, who has remained in custody, will be additionally booked on charges related to vehicular manslaughter.
